Two very different ways to book a car
Uber is a platform that connects passengers and drivers: you order in the app, the algorithm assigns the ride to an available driver nearby, and the price shown depends among other things on demand at that moment. Uber explains this itself on its website: it is called dynamic pricing.
An independent private driver such as Azuriva VTC works the other way round: you book in advance, you know who will pick you up, and the fare comes from a published scale (€10 pick-up charge, then €1.50 per km in the Alpes-Maritimes (06), €2.50 per km in the Var (83) and €1.80 per km in Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël, plus tolls). The price is set when you book and does not move, even if your flight lands during the Cannes Film Festival.
Side by side
| Criteria | Ride-hailing app (Uber type) | Pre-booked private driver |
|---|---|---|
| Ordering | Instant, in the app | Advance booking (online, phone, WhatsApp, email) |
| Price | Shown before ordering, varies with demand | Fixed at booking, based on a published scale |
| Driver | Assigned when you order | Known in advance, same contact from quote to ride |
| Delayed flight | New order once you land | Flight number tracked, pick-up adjusted |
| Very early morning | Depends on drivers online at that time | Slot reserved the day before or earlier |
| Long trips (Var, Saint-Tropez) | Possible, depending on drivers available | Core business: Nice, Toulon-Hyères and Marseille airports |
| Language | App in your language | Messages in English welcome by WhatsApp or email; the driver is French |
When an app is the right choice
To be fair: for a short ride across Nice decided at the last minute, an app is often the quickest solution. You do not need to plan anything and, outside peak demand, the price is competitive. Many professional drivers work through these platforms.
When booking a private driver makes a real difference
Arriving at Nice Côte d'Azur airport
After a long flight, waiting for a driver to accept the ride and then finding the car is not ideal. With a booking, your driver follows the real landing time and waits in the arrivals hall. To Monaco, count €61 during the day, for about 50 min on the road.
Leaving at 5 am
Apps depend on how many drivers are online at that moment, and there are fewer before dawn. A ride booked the day before is a reserved slot. See our guide to late-night and early-morning transfers.
Going to Saint-Tropez and the Var
From Nice airport to Saint-Tropez, count about 107 km and 2 h 18 min: this is a trip you plan. The reference fare (€242 during the day) is known before you leave, tolls included.
So which is cheaper?
It is impossible to quote a reliable Uber price in advance: the app calculates it when you order. The simplest approach is to compare yourself on the same day with our online calculator, which shows the detail per area, tolls and any 20 % night surcharge.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Is the trip time-critical (flight, train, meeting)? If so, a reservation reduces the risk.
- Are you travelling with children, a lot of luggage or a pushchair? A known car, with space planned in advance, is easier.
- Is it a short ride in town, decided on the spot? An app is perfectly suited.
- Do you need an invoice in your company's name? Both can provide one; with a private driver it is issued directly by the driver's business.
Whatever you choose, always check that the car displays the official VTC sticker and that the driver holds a professional licence: this applies to app drivers and independent drivers alike.
Our advice: for any trip that matters (a flight, a train, a meeting, a wedding), book ahead. For the rest, choose whatever suits you.
